Care, visibility and development of the social and educational skills of children with special educational needs

Development cooperation · Inclusive education in the rural communities of Ancahuasi

Project summary

The project reduces the exclusion and vulnerability of children with a disability – or at risk of developing one – and of those with special educational needs and their families, in the district of Ancahuasi. It involves the whole community and local institutions in order to secure their inclusion, increase their independence and improve their living conditions now and in the future. It works within the current education regulations of Peru’s Ministry of Education.

Areas of work

  • In the communities: raising awareness among local people to make the reality of these children’s lives visible and to remove the stigma of incapacity attached to them. An up-to-date census of children with special educational needs in the district is also being compiled, the first of its kind, alongside work to tackle the high rate of school absence.
  • In schools: training for teachers in primary schools and in the special education centre, and for the APAFAS (parents’ associations), to improve care and the early detection of these needs.
  • At the “Virgen del Carmen” special school: refurbishing and adapting outdated, inadequate facilities, and setting up a SAANEE (Support Service for Children with Special Educational Needs) covering both this school’s pupils and those in the communities’ mainstream primary schools.

Results

  • The first objective census of children with special educational needs in the district of Ancahuasi.
  • Teachers and families trained in early detection and in supporting diversity.
  • The “Virgen del Carmen” special school refurbished and equipped.
  • SAANEE up and running as a permanent support service.
