Project summary
Ethiopia has high rates of maternal and infant mortality, especially in rural areas such as Decha, where access to health services is very limited. The main causes of death are preventable and are linked to home births, a lack of antenatal check-ups, malnutrition and a shortage of health facilities. The project reduces that morbidity and mortality by strengthening accessible, good-quality health services delivered from Chiri Health Center.
Areas of work
- Building a maternity home that provides a safe, dignified environment for childbirth and antenatal care.
- Better prevention, with more antenatal check-ups.
- Wider access to healthcare for the most isolated rural communities.
- Better quality of care for pregnant women and for children under five.
Results
- Maternity home built and up and running.
- 200 pregnant women a year have access to a safe birth and antenatal care.
- 24,000 people across 10 rural communities with better access to health services.
- A reduction in the preventable causes of maternal and infant death in the area.
