Improving the quality of life of children with severe disabilities at the Mercy Servant of the Poor home

Development cooperation · Extending and adapting facilities and equipment in Machakos

Project summary

The “Mercy Servant of the Poor” home takes in patients from Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi who have been abandoned and must be discharged after treatment for chronic conditions and degenerative illnesses. These children have little chance of adoption and need a home when they leave hospital, as their severe neurological and mental disabilities leave them entirely dependent on others. The home currently cares for 30 residents, all with severe disabilities, as well as supporting dozens of homeless people.

Areas of work

  • Providing a home for those who have been abandoned and neglected.
  • Meeting their basic needs and improving their living conditions.
  • Offering love and all-round care to those society has pushed aside because of their physical, mental and health conditions.
  • First phase: extending and adapting facilities and equipment for people with disabilities.
  • Continuation: improving facilities, buying medical equipment and treating critical cases, such as that of a child with hydrocephalus.

Results

  • 30 residents with severe disabilities receiving all-round care.
  • 20 children with a better quality of life.
  • The home’s facilities extended and adapted to the needs of dependent residents.
  • Steadily rising numbers of people cared for.
